A close look at the Teahouse (and the Characters that visit it)
over 4 years ago – Fri, Sep 20, 2019 at 03:47:22 AM

Ladies and Gentlemen!

We have already taken a close look at Clan Powers and Specialists. Today it is time to wrap up the trilogy of large modules with the Teahouse, and a close look at the Characters who can join you on your way to make Yedo yours. Let’s start with the basics.

Playing a game with the Teahouse provides you with a third option whenever you activate a Disciple in any District. Apart from performing the District action (or its Prophecy) or activating the Disciple to perform a Mission task, you now have the option to forfeit those abilities and choose one of the Characters from the Teahouse instead. You may make use of this option only once per round.

The Character chosen is placed next to your Clan Board face down. Their abilities are not active on the turn they are taken. All Characters taken are flipped face up at the start of the next round, their abilities ready to be used by all who have them as guests of their Clan.

If you lend your roof to the Beggar, you immediately receive 2 Mon. Furthermore, other players can pay you 2 Mon each to receives their Blessing tokens.

With the Captain of the Guard on your side, you can be sure that none of your Disciples get arrested for any reason. They just become invisible to the City Watch.

The Carpenterprovides you with a very simple boon: you receive a 3 Mon discount when bidding for Annexes, as well as when you visit the Tavern District.

If you ally with the Ronin, he will become your man for the duration of the next round. You will simply receive an extra Disciple, who you can use even if you are already at the maximum of 4 Disciples.

Being friendly with the Shopkeeper allows you access to more Weapons. In fact, you get to draw 3 Weapons and keep one – and then add the rest to the Market.

The Storytellercan change a lot in the tale he tells. In fact, if you have him, you can convert 5 Mon gained from a Mission card into 1 Prestige every time you complete a Mission.

With the Fishermanyou can reach a part of the Harbour unknown to anyone else, allowing you to use the Harbour even if it is filled with other Disciples or inaccessible for any other reason.

If you choose to invite the Banker into your home, you can invest 5 or 15 Mon right before the bidding to then see your profits rise – and receive 10 or 25 Mon back.

The Senseiteaches one of your Disciples some useful skills. You may send a Disciple to the Sensei for a round. Afterwards, the Disciple will return as any of the Specialists available on the board.

With the Harbour Master you must be paid 1 Mon by any Disciple who wished to enter the Harbour. You can also, once during an Action Phase, spend 5/8/10 Mon to receive 1/2/3 Prestige – without activating a Disciple.

The Palace Guard offers you an entry into the Palace, by not only counting as a Disciple in the Palace (even if the Palace District is inaccessible), but he also allows you to draw an Action Card every time you complete a Mission in the Palace District.

Have you been seen in the company of Geisha Natsuko? That means that you will receive a 3 Mon discount at the Market and in the Tavern, and if you receive Prestige at the Harbour, you will receive 1 extra point.

When the Eminent Advisor to the Shogun becomes your friend, he allows you to find out the Shogun’s wishes and plans: you draw 3 Missions from any one deck and choose one to keep.

If you secure the favour of the Shogun’s Wife, your status will benefit: the Shogun’s Tea Ceremony will offer you 1 extra Prestige, and the Bakufu will offer you a choice between three Missions, instead of simply drawing one.

Finally, if the Shogun himself graces you with his visit, you will simply receive Prestige if you manage to entertain him properly. You will earn 1 Prestige, and then earn further Prestige for having a Geisha and a Manor, a Blessing and a Sacred Garden, and 3 Geishas (with all three of these scoring a total of 3 Prestige on top of 1 Prestige always scored).

As you can see, there are already 15 unique characters, each offering an ability like no other. Each Character stays with you for only one round, after which they are discarded – and every round a new set of Characters is drawn (with the discard pile getting reshuffled after the deck runs out). This creates a changing tableau of transient special abilities which you can use each turn.

However, it is still possible that you will not be able to use the Character’s ability – and if that happens, you simply draw a new Bonus card as a consolation, raising your potential to score Prestige. Each Character also comes with their own Prestige value – this is used only if the Character is drafted during the last round of the game, as the drafting player will not have the opportunity to use this new character’s abilities.

We hope this tells you all you need to know about the Teahouse Module. As always, if you have any questions be sure to let us know.

Have a great day!

Ladies and Gentlemen!

For many, Sunday is a time to rest and relax. Not for the Shogun, and for for his Assassins!

A close look at Specialists (and the new board)
over 4 years ago – Tue, Sep 17, 2019 at 06:11:25 PM

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Once again, we delay the moment when the Shogun becomes the Ex-Shogun to bring you something completely different (from the standard Shogun’s Daily Demise): a closer look at Specialists!

The Specialists are a kind of elite Disciples, each with their own special ability that you can strategically use during the game. At the beginning of each round you will draw a new Specialist token and set it up for a start of the round bid. Then, after the bidding is over, the token will be moved to the Gate District, where each player will have an option of hiring the depicted Specialist for a limited time.

The Specialist powers are:

When you finish a Mission with the Male Samurai, you make sure that it is done honourably. This rewards you with an extra Prestige point, even if the Mission originally did not offer a Prestige rewards. The Male Samurai is great to have early in the game.

When you finish a Mission with the Female Samurai, you gain the advantage of flexibility. You can immediately convert Mon into Prestige. This allows you to save on the conversion action, which is why the Female Samurai is great to have early in the game.

When you finish a Mission with the Messenger, you take advantage of his mobility, and immediately draw a new Mission into your hand. This means that you can either save some Mon or stop worrying about visiting the Palace. Since it is great to always have Missions in your hand, the Messenger is great to have early in the game.

The Ninjais a master of shadows and a mysterious figure whose existence has always been denied by respected members of Japanese society. Since you cannot apprehend what you cannot see (or believe to exist), the Ninja can never be arrested by the City Watch. This freedom of movement offers a formidable edge over opponents, which is why the Ninja is great to have early in the game.

With the Weaponsmith by your side, you gain a simple but important advantage: you can store an extra Weapon. Since Missions require you to simply have (and not give up) Weapons, the extra slot allows you to always be just that bit better prepared than anyone else. So, especially if you plan to invest heavily into Weapons, the Weaponsmith is great to have early in the game.

Finally, with the Monk you are considered Blessed, and you get to draw an extra card whenever you make a use of a Prophecy (the ability to look at – and possibly arrange – cards on top of any deck), you get to see an extra card. Since being Blessed can often get you out of trouble (and often give you a boost when performing a Mission), the Monk is great to have early in the game.

Are you already excited for the Specialists? Well, we’ve played them, and we really love them!

Finally, just before this update is all wrapped up, here is a closer look at the alternative board unlocked as the first Stretch Goal of the Yedo Deluxe Master Set campaign.

Have a great day!
